What is the Spiritual Significance of the Eclipse?
This Sunday, April 7, David Heilbroner, an Academy Award-winning movie producer and director will be at St. Philip’s with a small crew. They are preparing a documentary about the eclipse and want to video part of our Sunday service. David and his crew were in Uvalde last year when they began the project. They photographed the church and spoke with me about the eclipse.
David and his crew are interested in the spiritual significance of the eclipse. There are several places in scripture where celestial objects take on particular significance.
On the Feast of the Epiphany, we hear about the star that guided the magi to the house where Jesus was (Matthew 2:1-12). Joshua commands the sun to stand still to give the Israelites more daylight to fight their battle (Joshua 10:12). On the First Sunday of Advent each year, we hear about “signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars” (Luke 21:25). And the Prophet Joel speaks about “portents in the heavens” and the sun being darkened (Joel 2:30-31).
How do you see the spiritual significance of the eclipse? In what ways might it be a metaphor or image for the spiritual experience? We hope you will be with us on Sunday and support David and his work.
Peace be with you,
Mike
