Practicing Your Faith – A Class for Everyone!
New Sunday morning class “Practicing your Faith!”
This class meets weekly in Grace Hall from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. for approximately eight weeks. I am planning a new curriculum for this class that is a bit different from what we’ve done before. If you miss a class or you are interested in the content, the past classes have been videoed and can be viewed with the links below.
The topics include:
- Jan. 12 – The Spiritual Journey/Book of Common Prayer
Presentation Slides - Jan. 19 – Holy Eucharist
Presentation Slides - Jan. 26 – Liturgical Time
Presentation Slides - Jan. 2 – Scripture
- Jan. 9 – Sacraments
- Feb. 16 – Prayer
- Feb. 23 – Spiritual Practices and Rule of Life
- Mar. 3 – Vocation and Calling
After that, we’ll have the option of adding additional sessions to have deeper conversations about topics covered in the class or to address your requests for other topics.
I hope you will join us. The class is open to everyone, whether a lifelong Episcopalian or a first-time guest. Please come with questions, curiosity, and openness to what God might be up to in your life.
- If you are new to the Episcopal Church or St. Philip’s this class is for you. It is part of the preparation for those who want to become a member of the church.
- If you are already an Episcopalian or regular attender at St. Philip’s this class is for you. Consider it a retread and an opportunity to deepen what you already know or to remember what you may have forgotten.
- If you are just curious and want to learn more about the spiritual journey this class is for you. Hopefully, it will give you some new information, insights into your own life, and some ideas of what might be next.
Our book for the class will be Walk in Love, Episcopal Beliefs & Practices by Scott Gunn and Melody Wilson Shobe. We will not work directly from the book but I will reference it and it will be a good resource and supplement for what we do in class. It is available on Amazon for $14.96.
Bishop Read will be at St. Philip’s on Sunday, June 15, 2025, for our annual episcopal visit. He will celebrate and preach at the 8:00 and 10:30 liturgies, and baptize, confirm, receive, and hear the renewal of baptismal vows at 10:30.
Generally, membership in the church is through baptism. However, if you were baptized in another tradition membership happens through either confirmation or reception depending on which church you were baptized in. Please let me know if you would like to be baptized, confirmed, or received, or if you want to renew your baptismal vows when the Bishop is here.
While some in the class will be preparing for baptism, confirmation, or reception there is no expectation or obligation that you must do so. That decision is unique and personal to each individual. For others, the class will be a time of renewal, exploration, or deepening. Either way, all are welcome.
If you have questions or want more information about the classes please call or come by the office. I am grateful for your presence at St. Philip’s I look forward to our time together.
Peace be with you,
Mike
